Social Media for Small Business in 10 minutes a day!

You’re a small business, maybe even a one man/woman show and you want to establish a social media presence – but you’re busy!

Don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be complicated, you just need to get your foot in the door.  Here’s how you can do it in just 10 minutes a day!  There will be a few hours of initial investment time that you’ll have to spend.  But once you’re set up, maintaining it should be easy.

1. Decide which social media sites you want to be active on.

This can vary depending on your business.  Are more people in your field active on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn?  Is Pinterest for you?  If you’re not sure what the best sites will be for your business, take a look around.  If you’re not familiar with the social media sites, set up an account on each one and think like a consumer. 

2. Decide who to follow.

The great thing about social media is all the information that’s available to you.  First, look up companies/bloggers/journalists in related fields that you know you like.  Check their page and see if the posts/tweets/etc that they are sharing are something you are interested in.  If so, follow them.  In addition to posting original content, people tend to share content that they like or find useful.  This is another great way to find more people to follow.  Don’t forget to follow your clients; many of them will follow you back as well.

3. Re-post stuff you like.

Pick the social media account that has the best content for you.  For me, that’s Twitter, but it could vary by business.  Take 10 minutes a day, scroll through the posts, click on stuff that looks interesting and if you like what you read, re-post it.

Pro Tip! – Save time & get reports.

If you want to post the same content to all of your social medias sites, use an app like Buffer.  Their free plan allows you to connect up to 4 social media accounts and schedule posts on all 4 at the same time.  This means that you don’t have to individually go to each site to post.  You just copy the link you want to share, paste it into Buffer and then write whatever text you want.  You can even write unique text for each social media site you are posting to.  And with scheduling, instead of 10 minutes a day you could spend 45 minutes once a week, find all the content you want to share and the schedule it to post automatically throughout the week.  They will also send you weekly reports showing user engagement with your posts.
