Finding the Right WordPress Plugin

How do you find the right WordPress plugin for your website?

Check out the 4 steps below that we use to determine which plugins are worth trying and which ones are not!

Step 1: Search the WordPress Plugin Directory

Looking for a  plugin to add the “Share” box to the bottom of all your posts?  Type “share” in the search box.

Step 2: Look at the Stars, Downloads and Last Updated date

Step 2: Look at the Star Rating, Active Installs & Last Updated Date

Check the Rating, obviously more stars means more satisfied users.  Check the Downloads number to see how many people have used this plugin.

Compare the number of stars and downloads on each.  5 stars on a plugin that’s only been downloaded 100 times is not the same as a 4 star plugin that’s been downloaded 2 million times!

Check the Last Updated date.  If the plugin hasn’t been updated recently there’s a chance that it won’t be compatible with the latest updates in WordPress.

Step 3: Check the Description and Screenshots

Read over the description to make sure that the plugin does what you need it to do.  There are often links to a demo in the description so you can see exactly how it will work and how it will show up on your site.

If available, click on the Screenshot tab to get a quick view of what the plugins admin pages and samples look like. This can help you get a better idea of how easy or complicated the plugin will be to set up.

Step 4: Try it!

Once you’ve found one you like, go ahead and install it.  If you find 3 you like, try installing all three.  Check them out to see how easy they are to use and make sure that they are fully compatible with the other plugins in your site.  If you find  you don’t like it, you can always Deactivate and Remove it with a couple clicks.
